Students will be writing 2 demand pieces next week and will need notes to write essays on theme and character.

Up to Chpt 26 questions and domocracy /communist sheet done for Friday Nov. 27th Final Novel Project Assignment will be given out Friday.

All questions to the end of May 23rd should be complete. Sheet on Democracy/Communism should also be complete. (note: By Wed Nov 26th.)

Students read on today and were asked to complete their character and conflict placemats for homework. Specifically what did you learn about Alex and his father's personality in the first 2 chapters. Do you see any conflicts emerging?

Today we read another section up to April 4. I asked students to answer the following
1. Who is Eddie Nowlan and Lao Xu?
2. Is there really a formal newsroom? How do you know?
3. What is Tian An Men also called?
4. How does Beijing appear different than Toronto on pages 18 and 19.

For Tomorrow we will move on and read the April 4 and April 6th sections.
I will leave presentations until Wed during our double period.

For April 4th:

1. In a paragraph describe what Alex learned about Chinese cuisine and culture at the banquet.
How are their foods different from our chinese foods? What was said about cleaning the plate?


For April 6th.

1. Why did Alex think Lao Xu was amazing at the beginning of the chapter?

2. Read pg.35 and describe the Long March in detail.

3. What is the PLA?

4. See pg. 37. Why is Lao Xu working for Eddie?

5. What is Hu Kou? Why can't Lao Xu quit his job and go teaching?

6. How does Lao Zu act as a spy? What does Alex think of this?

7. Is there Freedom of the Press in China why or why not?

8. Based on what you have read so far what do you consider oppressive about China? (paragraph)

Poster presentations wil begin next Tuesday. Be ready!

Poster interviews will run from Tues Nov 3-Friday Nov 6

We will have had 3 working classes on project it is now time to finish poster at home. Follow directions carefully. Poster is Due Mon Nov 2.

You all should have a copy of the poster/presentation assignment. Due date to be announced shortly. We have one period in our library researching and will have 2 more. Use some time at home as well you know what our library computers are like. Research at home and bring materials to class with you!
